Long-tailed Tit (Aegithalos caudatus)

The Long-tailed Tit bird is a beautiful and fascinating member of the bird species. These tiny birds typically weigh around 7-8 grams, with a body length of just 14cm. However, their most distinctive feature is their long tail which can be nearly as long as their body, measuring up to 8cm.

These birds are not only captivating to observe but they are also highly social creatures, living in large groups of up to 20 individuals. They are known to be incredibly loyal to their family members, with siblings from previous broods often assisting the parents in raising their younger siblings.

Long-tailed Tits are found throughout Europe and Asia, inhabiting a variety of different habitats ranging from scrubland and hedgerows to deciduous forests. Their unique nests are intricately woven from moss, lichen, and feathers, and are gently supported by a gelatinous secretion made from the bird's saliva.

Their diet primarily consists of insects, with spiders, caterpillars, and beetles being some of their favorite prey. During the winter months, they often switch to a diet of seeds and berries, supplementing their diets with suet and other bird-friendly foods.

The Long-tailed Tit is a highly vocal bird, producing a variety of different calls and songs to communicate with each other. They are also known to be incredibly acrobatic creatures, capable of hanging upside down and even climbing down tree trunks headfirst to search for food.
