Raso Lark (Alauda razae)

The Raso Lark bird is a small passerine bird that is native to the rocky, arid plains of Raso Island in Cape Verde, West Africa. It is part of the Alaudidae family and is considered to be one of the rarest bird species in the world. Unfortunately, the Raso Lark bird is also classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss and predation by introduced cats and rats.

Measuring only 13cm in length, the Raso Lark bird has a distinctive streaked brown and buff plumage with a whitish belly and a long pointed bill. It is a ground-dwelling bird that forages for seeds and insects in the sparse vegetation that grows on the arid plains of its small island habitat. The Raso Lark has a unique vocalization, consisting of a typical lark-like descending dribbling song that can be heard during its breeding season from March to June.

The steep decline in the population of Raso Larks is largely due to habitat destruction and predation by introduced predators. Raso's island's ecosystem has been severely damaged by human activity and grazing animals, leaving the Raso Lark with little suitable habitat. In addition to habitat destruction, the introduction of cats and rats has resulted in significant population declines. These predators prey upon the bird's eggs and young, as well as the lark itself.

Conservation efforts have been made to protect the Raso Lark bird as it is critically endangered. The breeding ground of the Raso Lark has been made into a nature reserve protected by Cape Verde's government, with the protection of nests and control over introduced predators being a top priority. Furthermore, the "Island Conservation Society" also supports efforts to combat habitat loss and predation by invasive species on endangered bird species in the Cape Verde islands.

In conclusion, the Raso Lark bird is an important species of bird and requires significant attention to keep it from becoming extinct. With the help of conservation efforts and the establishment of protected areas, the Raso Lark bird can be saved from extinction and allowed to recover in its natural habitat. It is imperative that we continue to work on conserving the Raso Lark and its habitat to prevent it from becoming a mere memory.
