Black-browed Fulvetta (Alcippe grotei)

The Black-browed Fulvetta is a small, shy bird endemic to the eastern Himalayas in India and Nepal. It belongs to the family Sylviidae, which consists of small passerine birds that are known for their melodious songs and diverse habits.

The Black-browed Fulvetta has a distinctive appearance with a black face and a thin white stripe over its eye that extends slightly beyond the eye to form a brow. The upper body is brownish-olive, while the underparts are paler with some yellowish-buff on the throat and breast. The wings and tail are both reddish-brown, and the legs are pinkish-brown.

These birds are usually found in small flocks of 6-10 individuals. They are often difficult to spot, as they are incredibly agile and spend most of their time hopping through dense undergrowth and thickets in forested areas. They have a distinct and melodious call, which is a series of clear whistles that can last for several seconds.

The Black-browed Fulvettas are omnivores and feed mainly on insects and small invertebrates, but they also consume seeds and fruit. They are known to forage on the forest floor or in the understory, using their sharp bill to probe for insects and other prey.

Breeding season usually occurs from March to June, and the breeding pairs build their nests in thick vegetation close to the ground. The nests are made of grass and moss, with a side entrance and a small inner chamber. The female usually lays 2-4 eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately two weeks. Once hatched, the chicks are fed by both parents, who regurgitate insects and other small animals for them.

Although the Black-browed Fulvetta is not currently classified as a threatened species, habitat loss due to deforestation and human encroachment on their natural habitat is a potential threat to their survival. There are also reports of hunting and trapping of these birds for their meat, which presents an additional challenge to their conservation efforts. Overall, these birds are a fascinating and vital component of the ecosystem, and their conservation is crucial to maintaining the ecological balance of the eastern Himalayas.
