Golden-crested Myna (Ampeliceps coronatus)

The Golden-crested Myna bird, also known as the Chinese Myna or Crested Myna, is a small passerine bird that is native to East and Southeast Asia. It is a member of the starling family and is known for its vibrant golden crest on top of its head which makes it a distinct and unique bird.

This bird is about 23-25cm in length and weighs around 70-90g, making it quite larger than other myna species. Its body is sleek and black in color, with yellow-orange eyes and a small, sharp beak. Males and females look alike, except that males may have slightly longer crest feathers. The crest feathers on the Golden-crested Myna are relatively long and can be raised into an erect position, adding to the bird's distinctive appearance.

This species of myna is often found living near human settlements, often in parks, gardens and along city streets. It is an omnivorous bird and feeds on various fruits, seeds and insects. The Golden-crested Myna is also known to be quite vocal and has a variety of calls that it uses for different purposes, including mating displays, territorial defense and warning calls.

Breeding season for the Golden-crested Myna generally takes place from April to August. During this time, the male will court the female by displaying his crest feathers and singing. The birds build their nests together, usually in tree cavities or crevices in walls or buildings. The female lays between 4-6 eggs, which are incubated for about two weeks before hatching. Both parents take turns feeding and caring for their young, which usually fledge after about 18-21 days.

Unfortunately, the Golden-crested Myna is listed as an endangered species due to habitat loss and degradation, as well as the wild bird trade, which is a major threat to this species in some parts of its range. Conservationists are working to protect this species through habitat restoration, captive-breeding programs and anti-poaching efforts.

In conclusion, the Golden-crested Myna is a charismatic bird that is highly valued for its unique appearance and vocalizations. Although it is facing serious threats, conservationists are working hard to ensure the survival of this beautiful species.
