Greater Scaup (Aythya marila)

The Greater Scaup, also known as the Bluebill, is a diving duck that is widely distributed across North America, Europe, and Asia. These birds typically breed in the freshwater lakes and wetlands of Canada and Alaska, and migrate to the coastal waters of the United States and Mexico during the winter months.

Physically, the Greater Scaup is a medium-sized duck, with males typically weighing between 1.4 to 2.0 pounds and females weighing between 1.2 to 1.8 pounds. The plumage of the male is black and white, with a dark head and breast, white sides, and a blue-gray bill. Females are similarly marked, but have brown bodies with white markings on their faces and wings.

Greater Scaups are omnivores that feed on a variety of aquatic plants, invertebrates, and small fish. During the breeding season, they will consume more animal matter, while in the non-breeding season, they tend to consume more plant material.

These birds are monogamous and form long-term pair bonds during the breeding season. Males will defend their nesting territories, which are typically located on the ground near water, by aggressively chasing away other males. Females will lay a clutch of 7 to 9 eggs and incubate them for about 23 days, with the male occasionally helping to incubate the eggs.

Due to their large range and populations, Greater Scaups are not currently considered threatened or endangered. However, population declines have been observed in some areas due to habitat loss, hunting, and pollution. Efforts are currently underway to address these threats and ensure the continued survival of this important species.
