Stubble Quail (Coturnix pectoralis)

The Stubble Quail (Coturnix pectoralis) is a small, ground-dwelling bird native to Australia. It is part of the Quail family of birds, which also includes other species such as the Bobwhite Quail and the California Quail.

The Stubble Quail has a brownish-grey plumage, with a distinctive black throat patch and a white stripe above its eye. It is a relatively small bird, growing up to 20cm in length, and weighing around 80g. Its short wings and rounded tail make it well-suited for terrestrial movement rather than flight.

These birds typically live in grassy or shrubby habitats, such as farmland, grasslands, and open woodlands. They prefer to stay close to cover, such as dense shrubs or trees, and are often found near water sources. They are also known to be found near agricultural fields or paddocks, where they can feed on seeds, insects, and other invertebrates.

Stubble Quails breed during the winter months, from May to August. Males attract females through courtship displays, including calling and puffing up their feathers. The female will then lay a clutch of up to 12 eggs in a shallow, grass-lined nest on the ground, often in a well-hidden location. Both parents take turns to incubate the eggs and care for the chicks once they hatch.

While the Stubble Quail is not considered to be a threatened species, populations have declined due to habitat loss and changes in farming practices. However, they are still relatively abundant in many parts of their range. They are sometimes hunted for sport or for their meat, although hunting regulations help to ensure that populations remain stable.

Overall, the Stubble Quail is a fascinating and important bird species in Australia's ecosystem. With its unique appearance and interesting behavior, it is a favorite among bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
