Ladder-tailed Nightjar (Hydropsalis climacocerca)

The Ladder-tailed Nightjar, also known as the Long-tailed Nightjar, is a species of bird that can be found in the forests and woodlands of Central and South America. This unique bird belongs to the nightjar family, which are known for their distinct vocalizations and nocturnal habits.

One of the most striking features of the Ladder-tailed Nightjar is its long tail feathers, which can extend up to 49 centimeters in length, making it among the longest tail feathers of any bird in the world. Ladder-tailed Nightjars typically rest on the ground or on a low branch during the day, becoming active during the twilight and night hours. Their diet mainly consists of insects, including moths, beetles, and grasshoppers. They are also known to consume small mammals such as bats.

Males are known for their distinctive calls, which consist of a series of descending trills followed by a hiccup-like "hut" sound. They use their calls to attract females and establish their territory. After mating, the female lays two eggs which are incubated by both parents.

The Ladder-tailed Nightjar is considered to be a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Although they are not currently under threat, habitat destruction due to logging and agricultural activities could pose a future threat to their population.
